What Would You Change About Google Search?

Google's Matt Cutts, as you may know, frequently appears in videos for Google's Webmaster Central YouTube channel . In these videos he answers questions submitted by Google users. One of the latest ones features a different kind of (and perhaps more fun) question: If you could improve one thing or add a feature to Google Search right now, what would it be? ( Talk to ArisYulianta and Friends... what your answer would be . ) Every Google user probably has an answer for this question, and the differences among those answers are limitless. It is interesting to hear what Cutts himself has to say on the subject though, considering he has kind of become the unofficial posterboy for giving webmasters information about the inner-workings of the world's most popular search engine. Matt says there are actually a lot of things he would like to see added to Google Search, but one thing comes immediately to mind for him. When you do a search on Google (for example for "flowers"), the URL you get for the results is not just www.google.com/search?q=flowers. There are always other parameters such as "hl=en" and others. Cutts finds this annoying because he emails search results a lot, and English is the only language he speaks. He says he has even considered writing a Greasemonkey script that would eliminate the extra parameters. He also says he's tried to get some people at Google to consider changing it, but nobody is very exited about the idea because not that many people email search result URLs around. "But who knows? Maybe some day I will prevail," Cutts proclaims with a smile on his face. It's interesting to look at the comments for Matt's video . Other people have made suggestions for what they would change about Google search. Suggestions include more control over regular expressions, a date limiting factor on search results beside the search box, and Google Alerts recognizing hyphens in searches. What would you change about Google Search? Is there a feature you would add? Is there one you would like to see removed? Comment here . Continue reading

Hulu is Seeing Record Numbers

comScore Video Metrix has released its monthly look at the performance of online video content properties. As usual, Google sites dominate the picture, largely because of YouTube, which gets 99% of Google's video views. The real story, however, is that Hulu is achieving record numbers. The site ranked number 2 (though significantly behind Google with 3.1% market share compared to Google's 37.7) during the month of October, with an all time high of 856 million videos viewed. On top of that, the average Hulu viewer watched 20.1 videos during the month, representing another record for the site. This amounts to about 2 hours of videos per viewer. Here's a look at the top ten online video content properties for the month of October: Some other highlights (not Hulu-specific) from comScore's findings: Continue reading

Hulu Gets Feet Wet in the Music Video Pool

Hulu and record label EMI have struck a deal, which will give the video content site some music videos, one area in which the site has lacked. Hulu fans shouldn't get too excited about the site becoming a big music video destination just yet though. The deal, according to the New York Times, is to give artists Norah Jones her own channel (which is already live), and over time, add more EMI artists. The Norah Jones channel has all of her music videos, concert footage, and interviews. EMI is only one of four major labels, and the smallest one at that. So, even if more EMI artists begin getting their own channels on Hulu, that would hardly make it THE place to go for music video content. However, Hulu appears optimistic that it will get deals done with other labels in the future. Brad Stone with the NYT reports : Andy Forssell, Hulu’s senior vice president for content and distribution, said that Hulu toyed with the idea of putting tens of thousands of music videos on the site. “In the end, we thought the best starting point that fit with our mission, and with what our users expect, is a good mix of content, some music videos, long-form content and interviews, everything we can get for an immersive experience around certain artists,” he said. Mr. Forssell said talks were continuing with the other labels and that 'my sense is that we’ll be in relationships with all of them at some point." Music fans already have other options for music video viewing of course. To name a few, YouTube, MySpace, MTVMusic, and the highly anticipated Vevo (which is still in the works) will provide plenty of competition for Hulu in terms of capturing those views. Terms of the Hulu-EMI deal are unknown. Related Articles: > Continue reading

iTunes Lets You See Previews Without the Download

Apple has launched iTunes Preview, which is a means of showing what music is available on iTunes right in the web browser. This seems like an incredibly obvious way to do it, and one that many have been waiting for way too long, but now if you want to look at the iTunes catalog, without having to install iTunes, you can do so. You can't listen to song previews without installing iTunes, but at least you can see what they have. You do still have to download iTunes to purchase music. According to MacWorld , the feature only works for music, but could probably be applied to video at some point. The feature can be accessed at the iTunes Charts page or clicking on a link from the music store. When you go to a preview page, you can see information for the album like the track listing, the length, and the price. There are also reviews that you can read through. If you go to the Charts page , you can search for other artists and songs and get to preview pages for those results. However, if you click on the link on the search results page that says "view more results in iTunes," it will take you to the iTunes download page (assuming you don't have it installed).
