Google/NORAD Santa Tracking About to Begin Again

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, otherwise known as NORAD is tracking Santa Claus's rounds this year, keeping up a tradition that has been going on for 54 years. Norad has been working with Google for several years by way of Google Maps and Google Earth. Last year, they started using Google Analytics as well. Google is now sharing a video of last year's Santa tracking: On the YouTube blog, Jeff Martin writes : Oooh, it's almost Christmas! And that means that Santa is about to leave his digs at the North Pole to embark upon his '09 World Tour, placing presents under the trees of good little girls and boys all over the planet. Where will he be, and when will he make it to your house? You can find the answer at www.noradsanta.org . You see, every year, NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, tracks Santa's journey from the time he lifts off from his Arctic village to his final stop in Hawaii at the end of a looooooooong night. You can join the ride at Noradsanta.org or try m.noradsanta.org if you prefer to do your Santa tracking on a mobile phone. You'll also want to subscribe to the NORAD Tracks Santa YouTube channel , which will contain videos of many of his stops around the world, all captured by NORAD's Santa Cam network. Check out the related articles below for our coverage of Santa tracking from years past. If you go to NORAD's site , you can see a live countdown leading up to Santa's flight. The Things People Looked for Pictures of on Twitter in 2009

Earlier, we looked at Twitter's top trending topics of 2009 . They broke it down into several top ten lists based on various categories. Yfrog , a site that hosts images and videos for people to share on Twitter, has shared its top ten image searches for 2009. In other words, this is a reflection of what people are looking for images of on Twitter. Granted, Yfrog is not the only service that people use to share pictures on Twitter. TwitPic is an obvious one. Still, Yfrog is a reasonably popular one, and it would be hard to believe if TwitPic's list was too different. Here's Yfrog's Top 10 of 2009 1. New Moon / Twilight 2. Jonas Brothers 3. Tiger Woods 4. Michael Jackson 5. Halloween / costume 6. iPhone 7. Adam Lambert 8. Kanye West / RIP Kanye West 9. Iran election 10. Miley Cyrus "In 2009 posting pictures and videos to sites like Facebook and Twitter became standard practice for the tech savvy," a YFrog representative tells WebProNews. "Instant media sharing defined not only a new form of citizen journalism, but revolutionized how pop culture, politics and current events are captured and shared globally." This is only one of the many top ten of 2009 lists we have covered, and don't be surprised if there are more. PayPal Wants You To Regift Fruitcakes For Charity

For the second year, PayPal is running the Regift the Fruitcake campaign, an effort to raise money for charity through the sharing of a virtual fruitcake. The slogan is, "By giving the gift no one wants, you're giving the gift that everyone needs." PayPal is asking people to participate by logging onto the site to create a fruitcake on behalf of a featured charity (there are 25 of them), make a donation to a charity using a PayPal account, and using Facebook Connect to regift the fruitcake to friends. There are a number of videos on YouTube about the project . Here's one from last year from Yao Ming: "Fruitcakes will no longer be seen as the holiday doorstop, but a stepping stone to a higher cause," said Amanda Pires, senior director at PayPal. "The more fruitcakes that are regifted, the more chances fruitcakes have to make a real impact on important issues like fighting cancer, reducing poverty and rescuing animals. Finally fruitcakes will get the respect that they deserve." The idea is that the viral nature of the fruitcake via Facebook can get a lot of people to take notice and donate money for good causes. So far, there's been just over nine grand raised. Charities involved include St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, ASPCA, Boys and Girls Club, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Autism Speaks, and many more. "There's no shame in regifting this fruitcake," said Cameron Sinclair, founder, Architecture for Humanity. "It's the hero of the holidays -- the one brick shaped bad gift you can feel good about passing on to all your friends." "Our supporters aren’t typically huge fans of actual fruitcakes," said Cyndi Court, EVP, Resource Development & Marketing, Boys and Girls Club of America. "But this year, PayPal's viral fruitcakes will rise above the usual sweaters from grandma and become a gift they’ll love receiving – and regifting." PayPal will award the charity that raises the most money with $20,000; the second runner-up will get $10,000; and the third place charity will get $5,000. The most active users will also be rewarded. Regift the Fruitcake is only one example of how social media is changing charity. WebProNews recently did an interview with ER's Anthony Edwards on this subject. Check that out here .
