2009 In Review – According To Twitter

Now that Twitter employs a Chief Scientist , we will benefit from the ongoing interpretation and publishing of Twitter behavior and activity to better understand how Twitter is constantly evolving. In a discussion with Robert Scoble recently, I suggested that Twitter also consider hiring a digital anthropologist or sociologist, to not only analyze and comprehend data, but also effectively observe cultures and shifts within this burgeoning online society in order to participate in and ultimately shape its transformation. As shared in Twitter’s post announcing this year’s top trends: Twitter’s Trending Topics helped us understand what was happening around the world showing us that people everywhere can be united in concern around important events; excited about a new movie; or geek-out about a major new technology. Twitter is indeed a human seismograph , a reflection of current events as well as a real-time indicator of our focus and attention. Whether we agree or align with Twitter’s trending topics, they do in fact represent popular interest at any given time. In 2009, Twitter’s data concentrated on one particular topic that also demonstrated how diversified cultures, societies, beliefs, and politics can converge into one global community. Among all the keywords, hashtags, and phrases that proliferated throughout the year, one topic surfaced repeatedly. Twitter users found the Iranian elections the most engaging topic of the year. The terms #iranelection, Iran and Tehran were all in the top-21 of Trending Topics, and #iranelection finished in a close second behind the regular weekly favorite #musicmonday. If for but a moment, through services such as Twitter, we become one… As a seismograph detects and records the intensity, direction, and duration of a movement, Twitter captures the activity and reaction of people around events as they happen. In practically every instance, a spark triggered a social tsunami of tweets and retweets that echoed into history books of socialized media. Twitter Trends of 2009 News Events 1. #iranelection 2. Watch: Google Wave Shows Events of 2009

To say that 2009 has been the year of Google Wave might be a stretch. It was introduced this year, and invites have been sent out to quite a few people now. It has been the subject of a fair amount of discussion, but it hasn't reached the mainstream yet. That said, 2009 was the year Google Wave was unleashed upon the world in its most primitive state. There is certainly a lot of potential for Wave, and we will no doubt see that more and more as time goes on if it truly does "catch on." We have already seen some pretty cool things done with it. For example, the Google Wave Pulp Fiction video has already become something of a cult classic in the tech industry (contains strong language): Another Google Wave video has surfaced, uploaded to YouTube by RockYourWhirled (via LifeHacker ). What People Talked About on Twitter Most in 2009

Twitter has broken down the top ten trending topics of 2009 for a variety of categories: news events, people, movies, tv shows, sports, and technology, as well as the top ten hashtags used. "Since it's the end of the year, we thought it would be interesting to review the topics and issues that captured global attention over the year," says Twitter Chief Scientist Abdur Chowdhury. "In 2009, Twitter’s Trending Topics helped us understand what was happening around the world showing us that people everywhere can be united in concern around important events; excited about a new movie; or geek-out about a major new technology." The following chart shows all of the top ten lists: "Among all the keywords, hashtags, and phrases that proliferated throughout the year, one topic surfaced repeatedly," notes Chowdhury. "Twitter users found the Iranian elections the most engaging topic of the year." The terms #iranelection, Iran and Tehran were all in the top-21 of Trending Topics, and #iranelection finished in a close second behind the regular weekly favorite #musicmonday." As Twitter has carved its way into pop culture over the past year more than ever before, the trending topics highlight the collective interests of pop culture in general. The way that Twitter has broken these lists down into categories highlights these interests even further. If you want to be good at future editions of Trivial Pursuit, perhaps you should be following Twitter closely. Continue reading

Online Shoppers Have Bigger Holiday Budgets Than Offline Shoppers

Compete has shared some findings from a new study on consumer holiday shopping behavior. According to the firm, active online buyers (consumers who intend to spend over 30% of their holiday budgets online) have bigger budgets than other shoppers. Furthermore, they are more likely to spend that money on Black Friday. The study shows that "active online buyers" plan to spend twice as much ($912 on average) throughout the holiday season as other consumers. 37 percent of the online buyers also say they'll shop on Black Friday, compared with 33 percent of other consumers. "Many retailers are bracing for lower online sales, but our research shows that not all shoppers are created equal," said Debra Miller, associate, Retail and Consumers Products at Compete. "While most consumers say they'll spend less this year, online shoppers seem to have deeper pockets and they'll be looking for deals starting on Black Friday. Smart retailers should take a much closer look at online shopping segments relevant to them to capture a larger share of wallet among online consumers." Other findings from Compete include: - 86 percent of shoppers have completed less than half of their total holiday shopping; 41 percent have not yet begun. - 90 percent of consumers will spend at least some portion of their holiday budget online this year, up from 84 percent in 2008. - 42 percent of consumers reported that they are likely or extremely likely to select an “in store pick up” option if available for holiday purchases. - 44 percent of consumers plan to spend less this holiday season compared to last year, while only 12 percent of shoppers anticipate spending more. The report was compiled from a survey of over 2,900 consumers this month. What are your holiday spending plans? Are you an "active online buyer?" Related Articles: > Continue reading

Online Retailers To Have Better Holiday Season

Overall retail sales are expected to show no gain this holiday shopping season, while online retail sales in the U.S. will reach $44.7 billion during the holiday season, an eight percent increase over last year, according to a new report by Forrester Research. The growth rate represents an increase from 2008, when, on the heels of the global financial crisis, online holiday retail sales in the U.S. grew just five percent. Forrester defines the holiday shopping season as months of November and December. "Despite the lingering effects of the recession, the online space remains the retail industry's growth engine," said Sucharita Mulpuru, Forrester Research vice president and principal analyst. Sucharita Mulpuru "What's different this holiday from past years is that online retailers will manage to the bottom line, which will change some of the tactics they have employed in the past." The National Retail Federation has forecast a one percent decline in overall U.S. holiday retail sales for this year. A recent Forrester survey of more than 4,000 U.S. online consumers found that 94 percent of those who made a purchase online within the past three months plan to continue to buy online this holiday season. Nearly three- quarters (72%) of retailers surveyed in "The State Of Retailing Online," a Shop.org study done by Forrester in Q3 of this year, say they expect online holiday sales to increase over last year. According to Forrester, retailers will cut down on automatic free shipping and require price thresholds to qualify for free shipping. In addition, online retailers will use more cross-channel customer service options, advanced merchandizing software that will offer more product information, and improved social networking tools that will allow people to share purchase decisions with friends. "Tighter offline inventories may benefit the online channel as consumers go to the Web looking for products - and prices - they can't find in stores this holiday," said Mulpuru. "Online retailers will be ready for them with a special focus this year on engagement and service." Continue reading
