Traffic and Time Spent on Black Friday Sites Increase Rapidly

New research from Nielsen finds that during the last weeks of October and the early weeks of November, the number of unique visitors to the top websites offering previews of Black Friday deals (like bfads.net for example), has been increasing rapidly. No surprise there. Week-over-week, however, traffic to these sites has increased by as much as 87%, from 3.8 million unique visitors during the week ending November 8, to 7 million during the week ending November 15. "As we saw in our recent online holiday survey, consumers plan on bargain hunting more extensively this year in order to save money and many view the Internet as the place to do this," said Maya Swedowsky, associate research director, Nielsen’s online division. "Multi-channel retailers can leverage these Black Friday Web sites to draw consumers into their brick-and-mortar stores on the big day." In addition to the increase in traffic to Black Friday sites, the amount of time being spent on them is also on the rise: The "most buzzed-about" retailers of the last month, according to Nielsen are as follows: 1. Amazon 2. Walmart 3. Best Buy 4. Sears 5. Target 6. NewEgg 7. Toys R Us 8. Kohl's 9. Staples 10. Gamestop "Shoppers aren’t the only ones generating buzz about Black Friday deals. Retailers are taking advantage of social media and using it as a channel to share sneak previews of deals and to get shoppers excited,” noted Swedowsky. TGI Black Friday has been the fastest growing Black Friday site for unique visitors. This was followed by BlackFriday.fm and BlackFridayAds.com. Have you been going to Black Friday sites? Smartphone Sales Up 12% In Q3

Global mobile phone sales reached 308.9 million units in the third quarter of 2009, a slight increase of 0.1 percent from the third quarter of 2008, according to a new report from Gartner. Smartphone sales showed solid growth with more than 41 million units sold for a 12.8 percent increase from the same period last year. "The third quarter of 2009 saw the announcement of many new mobile devices, including several Android smartphones ready for the holiday season in the fourth quarter, but hardware commoditisation and the growth in open platforms will make it harder for them to stand out," said Carolina Milanesi, research director at Gartner . "Many devices will reach the market in time for Christmas, and mobile carriers will run incentives for consumers during the holidays. We expect sales of mobile devices in the fourth quarter of 2009 to show year-over-year growth," said Ms Milanesi. "As many vendors and industry watchers call for a decrease in sales into the channel, our sell through data is showing that 2009 performance will be flat rather than down over 2008." Nokia led the mobile market in Q3 with 36.7 percent of the share, followed by Samsung at 19.6 percent and LG with 10.3 percent market share. Nokia also ranked at the top in smartphone sales with 39.3 percent of the market, followed by Blackberry maker Research in Motion with 20.8 percent and Apple with 17.1 percent. "Smartphones continued to represent the fastest-growing segment of the mobile-devices market and we remain confident about the potential for smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2009 and in 2010," said Ms Milanesi. Amazon and Walmart Engage in Price War Over Holiday Book Shoppers

Amazon and Walmart have been engaged in an online price war over holiday sales of bargain books. The whole thing began when Walmart announced that it would let customers preorder 10 of the most highly anticipated upcoming books for as little as $10 each. In a matter of hours, Amazon matched the price for all of the same books. Walmart then dropped the price to $9. Then Amazon did the same. After this, Walmart dropped the price to $8.99. At this point, even Target decided to get in on the action and also posted prices for the same books at $8.99 a piece. Then Walmart lowered its price by another penny. As a result of this price war, traffic to the product pages of these books jumped. The following graph from Compete shows you how. "Over the course of this war, interest in these books at Walmart has been fickle," says Compete's Debra Miller . "Despite lowering prices first, Walmart has been unable to unseat the online book king in terms of the number of people shopping for these books. Continue reading
