Google's Matt Cutts discussed how the search engine handles sites that that are "in the cloud" with regards to how listings are affected. Matt's explanation was a response to the following user-submitted question: Can moving my website to "the cloud" harm my listings? Say my server's in Germany and I move the website to Google's App Engine or Amazon S3. Does this harm my listings for German results - or is it enough to set the "geographic target" in GWT to Germany? Matt broke the question down into separate parts to answer them. First, he took on the part about moving a site to "the cloud" harming the users' listings. His answer for this is basically that Google doesn't even know if your site is in the cloud, so it can't use that information to affect listings. "We don't know what is happening on the side of your web server. Your web server could be running Perl, PHP, Python, or Ruby on Rails," said Cutts. "All we know is what the web server returns. So your web server could be running code that would go talk to Amazon's cloud or Appspot or anywhere else in the cloud, but we wouldn't even know that. We don't even know whether a page is dynamically created or statically created. All we know is what the web server sends back." He says if your site is talking to the cloud behind the scenes, there is now way for any search engine or bot to know about that. Watch the video above to hear Matt's explanation for the second part of the user's question.
YouTube is readying the launch of an automatic captions feature for the site's videos. This and a new automatic caption timing feature will make it easier for anyone to add captions to their videos, and will enable anyone to read captions on more videos. "Since the original launch of captions in our products, we’ve been happy to see growth in the number of captioned videos on our services, which now number in the hundreds of thousands," says software engineer Ken Harrenstien, who helped design YouTube's caption features. "This suggests that more and more people are becoming aware of how useful captions can be. As we’ve explained in the past, captions not only help the deaf and hearing impaired, but with machine translation, they also enable people around the world to access video content in any of 51 languages. Captions can also improve search and even enable users to jump to the exact parts of the videos they're looking for." ( emphasis added ) "However, like everything YouTube does, captions face a tremendous challenge of scale," adds Harrenstein. "Every minute, 20 hours of video are uploaded. How can we expect every video owner to spend the time and effort necessary to add captions to their videos? Even with all of the captioning support already available on YouTube, the majority of user-generated video content online is still inaccessible to people like me." To help with this problem, Google has utilized its automatic speech recognition technology, and integrated it with YouTube's caption system to offer automatic captions. The captions generated by this will not always be perfect, as you can imagine, but as Harrenstein notes, even when they are flawed, they can still be quite helpful. He also says the technology will continue to improve over time. YouTube is also launching automatic caption timing to make it easier to create captions manually. With this feature, users can just create a simple text file with all the words in the video, and Google will use the automatic speech recognition technology to figure out where the words are spoken and create the captions for the video. That's pretty useful stuff. Google says both new features will be available in English by the end of the week. At first, auto-caps will only be visible on a few partner channels, so they can get feedback. Eventually, they will roll out more broadly. Related Articles: >

Today MySpace announced the beta launch of MySpace Music Charts . This is the social networks' attempt at ranking musicians based on popularity. "When it comes to users, our commitment to "interestingness' will drive engagement," says MySpace Music President Courtney Holt. "Our audience cares about two things- what's bubbling up and what's hot right now- and our editorial teams are focused on actively surfacing the most interesting and relevant artists, music and content to satisfy their needs. We also understand that the interests of our users change based on trends which is why the pulse of this charts system is the new "Movers" section, offering users and artists alike an immediate "in the moment" view at who and what is trending up in music across our network. MySpace's Music Charts include: - Artist, Song, Album, and Video Charts across all music genres. - Unique charts for all territories. - The ability for users to friend and connect with artists they discover in the charts - A new "Movers" section that highlights fastest rising artists and content across the network. - Artist contributed content which enables MySpace Music to feature the best content from all artists, both small and large. - The ability for users to engage directly with the Chart content. Songs, albums, videos are available for free to stream for users in all territories. - An updated look and feel with clean navigation. A quick browse though MySpace's charts tells me they have a lot of work to do in this "beta" version. Perhaps the work really lies within the classification of artists by label. I'm not a big fan of labeling music, but there are clearly issues when Staind is in the hardcore section, or when Seether is in both the indie and major sections under the metal category. Continue reading →

AdMob, which is being purchased by Google , has unveiled a new interactive video ad unit for the iPhone today. Upon the announcement of Google's acquisition, the highlights of the purchase included SMS, search, web display, and app display ads. Now, video is part of the mix. "For the first time, mobile video is truly interactive as we've included customizable in-player action buttons enabling consumers to engage with Web content and more video content without leaving the video player," says AdMob VP Product Ali Diab. The in-player action buttons enable users to browse web sites, view additional videos, etc. while the video is playing. As AdWords Senior Product Specialist Frederick Vallaeys discussed in a recent interview with WebProNews , you can expect to see a lot of new interesting mobile advertising trends in the coming year or so, particularly as a result from Google's acquisition of AdMob. Other iPhone units offered by AdMob include Multi-Panel Banner, Scrolling Canvas, and Search. The company says the new video ad unit will be sold primarily as an interstitial that will automatically play as an application loads. "AdMob's new Interactive Video Ad Unit brings together consumers' love of watching videos on their mobile device with advertisers’ goal of providing an interactive, social experience for consumers," said AdMob CEO Omar Hamoui. "We are excited to create new ways for advertisers to engage with consumers on their mobile devices and for the developers behind the most popular and engaging iPhone applications to effectively monetize." The first ads will begin running this week in select (but unnamed) applications across AdMob's iPhone ad network. This network has reached over 20 million iPhones and iPod Touch devices around the world this year so far. A video demonstrating the new video ad unit can be viewed here .
