FTC Sues Intel, Intel Says “Misguided”
The Federal Trade Commission has sued Intel, saying it has "abused its market dominance" according to the LA Times . Richard A. Feinstein, director of the FTC's Bureau of Competition is quoted as saying: "Intel has engaged in a deliberate campaign to hamstring competitive threats to its monopoly. It's been running roughshod over the principles of fair play and the laws protecting competition on the merits." Intel issued the following statement today: "Intel has competed fairly and lawfully. Its actions have benefited consumers. The highly competitive microprocessor industry, of which Intel is a key part, has kept innovation robust and prices declining at a faster rate than any other industry. The FTC's case is misguided. It is based largely on claims that the FTC added at the last minute and has not investigated. In addition, it is explicitly not based on existing law but is instead intended to make new rules for regulating business conduct. These new rules would harm consumers by reducing innovation and raising prices." Intel senior vice president and general counsel Doug Melamed added, "This case could have, and should have, been settled. Settlement talks had progressed very far but stalled when the FTC insisted on unprecedented remedies – including the restrictions on lawful price competition and enforcement of intellectual property rights set forth in the complaint -- that would make it impossible for Intel to conduct business." "The FTC's rush to file this case will cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars to litigate issues that the FTC has not fully investigated. It is the normal practice of antitrust enforcement agencies to investigate the facts before filing suit. The Commission did not do that in this case," said Melamed. The FTC's suit claims Intel engaged in threatening and rewarding of big-name PC makers like Dell, HP, and IBM. Last month, Intel agreed to pay $1.25 billion to settle multiple disputes with rival chip manufacturer AMD over similar accusations. Intel was also recently hit with an antitrust suit from the New York Attorney General. Continue reading

Hulu Gets Feet Wet in the Music Video Pool
Hulu and record label EMI have struck a deal, which will give the video content site some music videos, one area in which the site has lacked. Hulu fans shouldn't get too excited about the site becoming a big music video destination just yet though. The deal, according to the New York Times, is to give artists Norah Jones her own channel (which is already live), and over time, add more EMI artists. The Norah Jones channel has all of her music videos, concert footage, and interviews. EMI is only one of four major labels, and the smallest one at that. So, even if more EMI artists begin getting their own channels on Hulu, that would hardly make it THE place to go for music video content. However, Hulu appears optimistic that it will get deals done with other labels in the future. Brad Stone with the NYT reports : Andy Forssell, Hulu’s senior vice president for content and distribution, said that Hulu toyed with the idea of putting tens of thousands of music videos on the site. “In the end, we thought the best starting point that fit with our mission, and with what our users expect, is a good mix of content, some music videos, long-form content and interviews, everything we can get for an immersive experience around certain artists,” he said. Mr. Forssell said talks were continuing with the other labels and that 'my sense is that we’ll be in relationships with all of them at some point." Music fans already have other options for music video viewing of course. To name a few, YouTube, MySpace, MTVMusic, and the highly anticipated Vevo (which is still in the works) will provide plenty of competition for Hulu in terms of capturing those views. Terms of the Hulu-EMI deal are unknown. Related Articles: > Continue reading

Majority Of Americans Reading Newspapers In Print And Online
The majority (74%) of Americans, or nearly 171 million people, read a newspaper in print or online during the past week, according to a new report by Scarborough Research. "While our data does show that print newspaper readership is slowly declining, it also illustrates that reports about the pending death of the newspaper industry are not supported by audience data," said Gary Meo, Scarborough Research's Senior Vice President of Print and Digital Media Services. "Given the fragmentation of media choices, printed newspapers are holding onto their audiences relatively well and this is refreshing news." Highlights of the report include: Continue reading

Paramount Follows Up “Paranormal” Marketing with More Social Fun
Paramount, the company behind the distribution of the smash-hit Paranormal Activity is now showcasing a new film-meets-social media project. Paramount's Paramount Digital Entertainment (PDE) division has teamed up with Adobe, MySpace, Mountain Dew, and Blockbuster on the production, distribution, and marketing on a new "supernatural thriller" web series called Circle of Eight . We were interested in how the concept came about. PDE Senior Vice President, Creative Development & Production, Keith Quinn tells WebProNews, "The story and the interactive format were conceived at the same time—Circle of Eight was born as a project that was intended and customized for digital distribution in its debut window, and across platforms for additional windows." Circle of Eight debuted with 3 episodes on MySpace. Viewers are able to share and embed the content, interact with the series through social gaming and content, and broadcast their thoughts via forums and commenting. The series will consist of 10 episodes in all, and the gaming and social media elements are integrated into the show itself. The marketing is integrated too. That's where Mountain Dew comes in. Mountain Dew plays a "critical" role in the Circle of Eight storyline. Continue reading
