Hulu Adds New Options to the Queue

Popular online video destination Hulu has added a new default view for the user's queue. The new view groups all videos within the queue by show. In the past, users could only sort everything by show by clicking on the title and information column. "As we've added more content and as users' queues have grown in size, grouping by show as a default was a logical update," says Eugene Wei VP, Product at Hulu. With the new layout, there are two display options. One of them is a vertical text list of videos for each show, and the other shows them more visually with thumbnails, horizontally. You can see both displays below. Both views contain a link that says "Play All," which will allow users to simply play the videos in order from oldest to most recently aired. "As before, clicking on any video within a show in your queue will activate continuous play, but in this new 'group by show' view, we’ll only play through all the videos from that particular show," notes Wei. In addition to the new display options for the queue, Hulu has made it easier to add entire seasons of shows. On show pages, there is now a link that says "+ all". Clicking this will have a whole season of a how queued up for you. Google Most Popular Site Among Seniors

The number of seniors actively using the Internet has increased by 55 percent to 17.5 million over the last five years, according to a new report from Nielsen. Among people 65+, the growth of women in the last five years has outpaced the growth of men by 6 percent. More seniors are also spending more time online. Time spent on the Internet by seniors increased 11 percent in the last five years, from 52 hours per month in November 2004 to just over 58 hours in 2009. "The over 65 crowd represents about 13% of the total population and with this increase in online usage, they are beginning to catch up with their offline numbers," said Chuck Schilling, research director, agency & media, Nielsen's online division. "Looking at what they're doing online, it makes sense they're engaged in many of the same activities that dominate other age segments - e-mail, sharing photos, social networking, checking out the latest news and weather - and it's worth noting that a good percentage of them are spending time with age-appropriate pursuits such as leisure travel, personal health care and financial concerns." Online seniors participate in a variety of activities, from email to bill paying. Checking personal email was the top online activity for the majority (88.6%) of seniors in the last 30 days. Viewing or printing online maps and checking the weather were the second and third most popular activities, with 68.6 and 60.1 percent, respectively. The most popular online destination for people over 65 in November 2009 was Google Search, with 10.3 million unique visitors. Windows Media Player and Facebook ranked in the second and third position with 8.2 million and 7.9 million visitors, respectively. Overall, the number of unique visitors who are 65 or older on social networking and blogs has jumped 53 percent in the last two years. 8.2% of all social network and blog visitors are over 65, just 0.1 percentage points less than the number of teenagers who visit these sites. Google Makes it Easier to Tell Where Results Originate From

Google has begun including geographical region information on some search results. The information is used when supplied by webmasters, and appears in the green address line on the results that include it. "Country-code top-level domains (or ccTLDs) can provide people with a quick and valuable clue about the location of a website—for example, ".fr" for France or ".co.jp" for Japan," explains Google software engineer Piyush Prahladka. "However, for certain top level domains like .com, .info and .org, it's not as easy to figure out the location." "With the new display, you no longer need to refine your search or click through the results to figure out which page is the one you're looking for," says Prahladka. "In general, our hope is that these region tags will help searchers more quickly identify which results are most relevant to their queries." If you wish to provide Google with the information required for getting your site's region to show up in search results, you will need to log in to Webmaster Tools and go to Site configuration > Settings > Geographic Target . There you will be able to associate a country/region with your site. Webmasters have been able to utilize the feature that lets them associate their sites with regions for quite some time, but that information hasn't appeared in search results in the past. Right now, Google is only showing region tags in results for certain domains like .com and .net. They don't show them at all for sites that have location-specific ccTLDs (.br, .co.uk, etc.). The feature is designed to help users figure out where a site is based if that is not already clear. It is also worth noting that Google will only show the region tags when the region associated with the site is different than the region the searcher's query originates from . So if I search from here in the US, I will not see results that say "US", but I might see results that say "Canada". Google Getting More Experimental With Search Ads

Google is now offering some new formats for search ads. They have already been testing them in the U.S., so there is a chance you have already seen some of them if you live here. Some of them include videos. Some include maps. Some include multiple links for different landing pages. Some of the new ads include product images with corresponding links and prices. Some actually offer comparison shopping functionality. Take a look at some examples: "At Google, we're committed to giving you the information you want — regardless of the form in which it might appear," says Google VP, Product Management Susan Wojcicki. "Text is often useful, but sometimes videos and pictures are a more effective way to receive information. For example, if you want to learn a magic trick, a video showing you how to perform the trick is likely the best result. So over the past few years, we've blended videos, images, maps and more into the search results on Google.com." Using that logic, Google figured its search ads should fit a similar mold. The company says that while it is experimenting with new formats, they will "remain loyal" to their core principal, which is, "getting the right ad to the right person at the right time." Google says you will probably see even more formats appear with search results in the future. This will occur until they figure out which ones are most useful, relevant, and engaging. Expect a lot of new things. Related Articles: > Google and Heineken Study Paid Search for Branding > Report: Paid Search Spend Up 10% > Search Ads Convert Better with Display Continue reading

Google Testing a Revamp of the Search Results Page

Google is testing a new user interface for its search options feature. If you are unfamiliar with the search options feature, it is the link on your search results page that says "show options" and brings up a menu on the left-hand side of the screen providing a number of ways to filter your results. According to Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land, a "small number" of Google users will see the new interface starting today. The aim of the new interface is to provide users with a cleaner display. Sullivan says that if the testing goes well, Google may roll it out after the New Year . He quotes Google's Marissa Mayer as saying, "We're basically looking at a new look and feel for Google. It's an overall cleaning up of the search engine results page." Do you think Google's results pages need a new look and feel? Talk to ArisYulianta and Friends... what you think . Images of this new look and feel look strangely familiar - similar to that of a certain "decision engine." Take a look: Of course, the Google's search options and Bing have been compared in the past (and other search engines utilize a similar design too for that matter), in terms of the general layout. Their functionalities differ on various levels. It's important to note that this will just be how the search results pages will look, without having to click the search options link to get to it. There has been discussion in the past about how much users actually use Google's search options, simply because the feature is easy to overlook. Such a change would put the options right in your face. Continue reading
