Google Puts Universal Search in Suggestions, Launches Quick Scroll

In case you were thinking that Google hadn't made enough announcements this week, they have made a couple more. First, they are adding universal search results to Google Suggest, and second, they have released a new Chrome extension called Google Quick Scroll. Universal search in Google Suggest means that if you begin typing a query, not only will Google give you suggested text to help you complete your search, but they may even give you some of the other universal search information you're used to seeing in search results. One example would be weather results for specific locations: "This kind of information will appear in Suggest either above or below the suggested search terms for a variety of queries," Google says . "For example, you can type 'delta 140' to see the flight status. You can also quickly discover the current time, figure out how many Euros you'll get per dollar, or even brush up on metric conversions. In total, there are currently 10 universal search features available in Google Suggest: weather, flight status, local time, area codes, package tracking, answers, definitions, calculator, currency and unit conversions — and we plan to add additional features in the future." As Google continues to add additional features to Universal Search in Google Suggest, let's hope that they are able to better control those than they have been with Google Suggest in general , particularly if they add images to it. Google began adding ads to Google Suggest earlier this year. The Quick Scroll Chrome extension lets users use Google's search capabilities after leaving our results page. After a user clicks a result the extension scrolls right to the relevant content. A small black box appears in the lower right hand corner of the browser with a couple snippets of text from the page that might be relevant to your query. The extension works kind of like your web browser's "find" feature, but it isn't limited to exact words like that. It appears to use Google's algorithm for determining relevance. "Like Google Search, Quick Scroll analyzes things like proximity, prominence and position of the words to identify the most relevant content," the company says. "You can think of it like a personal assistant who reads webpages before you do and highlights the parts you might want to read. If several sections of the page have useful content, Quick Scroll will show you multiple text excerpts from different portions of the page and you can click on any of them to scroll to that spot." Quick Scroll doesn't appear for all results. It only shows up if Google doesn't detect that the entire page is relevant to your query, and there is actually a need to scroll to a specific section. Microsoft Takes Users Behind Bing

Microsoft has launched a new site for Bing, where users can go to find out the latest features that have been implemented into the search engine (excuse me, "decision engine"). The site's called Behind Bing . "You can see each feature in action though a screencast, see me talk about why we did it the way we did (for those who like to geek out), and get some drill-down details," says Bing's Stefan Weitz. "For those of you pressed for time, check out 'Features for You' at the bottom of the site which highlights some features that I thought were especially cool depending on what and where you are." Highlighted on the site currently are sections looking at: - Real-time search - Bing Local - Weather/Event results - Enhanced Results - Enhanced hover - Bing for mobile - Videos - Bing Travel - Bing Health - Visual Search - Bing Shopping - Wolfram Alpha - Search Sharing - Reference There are videos and other sections for "explore," "overview," and "insight guide." If you don't regularly keep up with Bing's announcements or search news in general, this should serve as a good place to check out from time to time just to see what the search engine has been up to, and to stay informed about any functionalities that you may have otherwise missed. That will of course require that Microsoft keeps it updated. Continue reading

Some Bing Users Seeing Latest Posts on Publisher Searches

Bing appears to be either testing or rolling out a new feature for news sites in its search results. The feature brings up a few of the most recent posts from a news source, when that source itself is the query. I say this is either a test or a gradual roll out, because it is not happening in my own searches. TechCrunch has a piece about the feature (and a screenshot), which shows it, so evidently some people have it. If you search for "TechCrunch," or the "New York Times," or presumably "WebProNews" or any other news source, you would get three listings (under the regular snippet/deep links) that display how old they are. The feature is much like Bing's current display for celebrity/a-list twitterer searches. As TC's Erick Schonfeld notes, "It’s part of Bing’s obsession with providing realtime results." This obsession should be amplified soon (with Google also) as the results from the deals with Facebook and Twitter begin to surface. The new news source feature is only a minor feature of Bing search because if it only displays for queries for that particular publication, chances are that users are just going to click through to the publication itself, where they will see the top headlines anyway. Judging from the similar feature Bing has in place for Tweets, they are often not the latest ones anyway (granted, Tweets can roll out a lot quicker than articles). Still, the feature will give publications that much more real estate within search results, though the value of that real estate is debatable, considering the user is already searching for the publication. Google Makes Improvements to Movie Showtime Searches

Google has launched some new improvements to its movie showtimes search feature. These include more movie pages, genre filters, and a new map view. If you search for a movie and click the "more theaters" link in the showtimes listing, you will be taken to a more thorough page about that movie, including more showtimes, reviews, trailers, photos, etc. You can also see a list of new genre filters to search by on the left-hand side of the screen. If you go to google.com/movies, you can find a list of all the theaters and showtimes in your area. The map view feature lets you see nearby theaters playing specific films. It is worth noting that Microsoft's Bing search engine already has very similar features when you search for movies on there. It utilizes MSN movies, and has movie pages with trailers, reviews, photos, etc. It also has a map view feature. Google appears to have it beat on the genre listings feature, however. Do you use Google (or Bing) to find movie showtimes when you go out? Do you find the new features helpful? Comment here .
