Google Shares Top Retail Searches for the Holiday Season
Google has shared the top retail searches for the 2009 holiday season. These results are based on the company’s Insights for Search tool. “Using Google Insights for Search, we can see that the hottest toys over the last seven days include stalwarts like Pikachu and Legos, as well as newcomers, such as the Nerf Marshmellow Shooter and the surprise hit of the holiday season, a blanket-with-sleeves known as the Snuggie,” says Eric Lopez of the Google Retail Team. “In the shopping category, we’ve seen Black Friday reach new heights, toping the rising search term list over the last 30 days as consumers continue to seek out the best prices,” adds Lopez. “Consumers too continue to turn to familiar, top retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon and Macy’s.” Google has been encouraging retailers to start looking ahead to the rest of the Winter season with regards to what people will be searching for: things like Valentine’s Day gifts, Prom dresses, wedding planning, ski equipment, etc. On a positive note for retailers, new research from Market Force Info finds that a good percentage of consumers intend to “splurge” on at least one item over the next few months. Hulu Partners With “American Idol” Creator For Web Reality Show
Simon Fuller, creator of “American Idol,” is partnering with Hulu on an online reality program that follows the lives of five people hoping to make it in Hollywood. The new online program called “If I Can Dream” will launch in early 2010 with each episode streaming exclusively on Hulu. Hulu says “If I Can Dream” will be the first recurring show to be available to international audiences. Hulu and Clear Channel will create a distribution partnership with MySpace as well. ” If I Can Dream ” will have a customized page on MySpace allowing fans of the show to interact with the cast via comments and sharing. The ad-supported program has signed on Pepsi and Ford as its first two major sponsors. “Innovate is not a buzzword for Simon Fuller and 19 Entertainment. They’ve consistently delivered extremely high quality content in innovative ways, and helped to change how viewers engage with entertainment,” said Andy Forssell, SVP of Content and Distribution at Hulu. “That’s a great match with what Hulu is all about, Continue reading

Hulu Adds New Options to the Queue
Popular online video destination Hulu has added a new default view for the user’s queue. The new view groups all videos within the queue by show. In the past, users could only sort everything by show by clicking on the title and information column. “As we’ve added more content and as users’ queues have grown in size, grouping by show as a default was a logical update,” says Eugene Wei VP, Product at Hulu. With the new layout, there are two display options. One of them is a vertical text list of videos for each show, and the other shows them more visually with thumbnails, horizontally. You can see both displays below. Both views contain a link that says “Play All,” which will allow users to simply play the videos in order from oldest to most recently aired. “As before, clicking on any video within a show in your queue will activate continuous play, but in this new ‘group by show’ view, we’ll only play through all the videos from that particular show,” notes Wei. In addition to the new display options for the queue, Hulu has made it easier to add entire seasons of shows. On show pages, there is now a link that says “+ all”. Clicking this will have a whole season of a how queued up for you. The Most Searched For Terms of 2009
Experian Hitwise announced that it has found Facebook to be the top search term overall for the year 2009 after analyzing the top 300 search terms for the year. This is the first year Facebook has been the top search term, and it accounted for 0.67% of all searches, according to the research firm. Variations of the term Facebook actually accounted for four of the top twenty-five terms, the firm says. “Facebook” itself moved up from the 10th spot in 2008 to the top spot in 2009. Although MySpace has taken a lot of flack in recent memory, as Facebook has gained popularity, MySpace was still the second most-searched term in 2009, according to Experian Hitwise. It had been the top term for the previous three years. Following MySpace on the list was Craigslist, YouTube, and Yahoo Mail. “Analysis of the search terms reveals that social networking–related terms dominated the results, accounting for 2.48 percent of the top 300 searches,” a representative for Experian Hitwise tells WebProNews.
