MySpace Launches New Music Charts

Today MySpace announced the beta launch of MySpace Music Charts . This is the social networks' attempt at ranking musicians based on popularity. "When it comes to users, our commitment to "interestingness' will drive engagement," says MySpace Music President Courtney Holt. "Our audience cares about two things- what's bubbling up and what's hot right now- and our editorial teams are focused on actively surfacing the most interesting and relevant artists, music and content to satisfy their needs. We also understand that the interests of our users change based on trends which is why the pulse of this charts system is the new "Movers" section, offering users and artists alike an immediate "in the moment" view at who and what is trending up in music across our network. MySpace's Music Charts include: - Artist, Song, Album, and Video Charts across all music genres. - Unique charts for all territories. - The ability for users to friend and connect with artists they discover in the charts - A new "Movers" section that highlights fastest rising artists and content across the network. - Artist contributed content which enables MySpace Music to feature the best content from all artists, both small and large. - The ability for users to engage directly with the Chart content. Songs, albums, videos are available for free to stream for users in all territories. - An updated look and feel with clean navigation. A quick browse though MySpace's charts tells me they have a lot of work to do in this "beta" version. Perhaps the work really lies within the classification of artists by label. I'm not a big fan of labeling music, but there are clearly issues when Staind is in the hardcore section, or when Seether is in both the indie and major sections under the metal category. Hulu Gets Feet Wet in the Music Video Pool

Hulu and record label EMI have struck a deal, which will give the video content site some music videos, one area in which the site has lacked. Hulu fans shouldn't get too excited about the site becoming a big music video destination just yet though. The deal, according to the New York Times, is to give artists Norah Jones her own channel (which is already live), and over time, add more EMI artists. The Norah Jones channel has all of her music videos, concert footage, and interviews. EMI is only one of four major labels, and the smallest one at that. So, even if more EMI artists begin getting their own channels on Hulu, that would hardly make it THE place to go for music video content. However, Hulu appears optimistic that it will get deals done with other labels in the future. Brad Stone with the NYT reports : Andy Forssell, Hulu’s senior vice president for content and distribution, said that Hulu toyed with the idea of putting tens of thousands of music videos on the site. “In the end, we thought the best starting point that fit with our mission, and with what our users expect, is a good mix of content, some music videos, long-form content and interviews, everything we can get for an immersive experience around certain artists,” he said. Mr. Forssell said talks were continuing with the other labels and that 'my sense is that we’ll be in relationships with all of them at some point." Music fans already have other options for music video viewing of course. To name a few, YouTube, MySpace, MTVMusic, and the highly anticipated Vevo (which is still in the works) will provide plenty of competition for Hulu in terms of capturing those views. Terms of the Hulu-EMI deal are unknown. Related Articles: > Continue reading

Facebook Blocks Popular iLike App

Now that iLike owned by rival MySpace, Facebook is restricting some features of the iLike app on it pages. The move is bound to be unpopular with the 12 million users that have made iLike the #1 music app on Facebook. Over the last few days Facebook users who had installed the iLike app received this message: "Due to upcoming Facebook changes, your Music data on Facebook won’t show on your profile and you’ll stop getting concert alerts. Take this step to save your music data ." The restrictions stop users from adding music to the Facebook profile and receiving personalized concert alerts. iLike has responded by asking users for their email address to send concert alers directly.
