Facebook Nabs #1 Honors For Site Visits On Christmas Day

While most of us in the Internet marketing “industry” were all aghast at the Facebook privacy problem of ’09 , the rest of the world could have cared less. You know those people, right? The ones who don’t live and breathe this stuff to the point that all perspective is lost? These are the ‘everyday’ Facebook users who don’t give a rip about Mark Zuckerberg and the continued search for 7,000 people who care enough to impact any policy changes with the social media giant. So those regular folks pushed Facebook to a point where it had never been before: the number one site during the Christmas holiday. ReadWriteWeb tells us Christmas is a holiday that brings people together, so perhaps it should be no surprise that Facebook has become a part of millions of peoples’ Christmas experiences. For the first time in its history, Facebook was the #1 most visited website in the United States on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day this year, according to traffic analyst firm Hitwise today. Makes sense doesn’t it? Personally I was more prone to using Skype rather than updating everyone but that is certainly a personal preference. So while the site finished third for the year behind Google and Yahoo Mail it was certainly a milestone to be seen as the Christmas site of choice. Last year Facebook finished second in this contest to Google but was able to flip positions this year. See what a year of gigantic growth can do for you? Wonder if Santa will be as nice to Facebook next year after the rest of the world catches on that their “goings on” at Facebook aren’t as private as they used to be? Comments Continue reading

LinkedIn Launches Faceted Search Feature

LinkedIn has launched a new addition to its People Search Experience. It's called "Faceted Search". Faceted search allows you to search for a person and narrow that search down by specific "facets" as you go along, in order to quickly find the most relevant profiles possible. Users are presented with categories under the following facets as they search: current company, past company, location, relationship, industry, school, and profile language. The following clip nicely sums up how it works: "The filters are generated in real time for every query by parsing all matching results and extracting the most important attributes," explains LinkedIn's Esteban Kozak. "We then present those to you in an intuitive interface that lets you select one or multiple filters per facet. You can refine, expand or stumble upon insightful information by simply clicking on the search options that matter to you." Kozak says that Faceted Search improves precision, increases efficiency, and reduces the need for complex queries. "It significantly reduces the need for complex Boolean queries," he says. "This was a particular need we heard from many of our power users." LinkedIn gave its entire search interface an overhaul earlier this year, and has recently made significant design changes . A couple months ago, the company announced that it had surpassed the 50 million-user milestone. Continue reading

New Twitterers Down, Tweets Up in October

Last month we looked at Twitter's numbers for user registrations and total tweets for the month of September. We saw a small decline in new user registrations, but tweeting appeared to be on the rise again following the previous month in which tweeting declined. The numbers for October follow a similar trend. The information was supplied by Matthew Daines, the lead developer of the Twitter app, Twellow . "Monthly registrations continue a downward trend, while monthly tweets sent has set another record at 809 million," says Daines. "The rate of increase in the number of tweets sent has slowed somewhat from September, but not at a pace to match the lower registrations, so I think people who actually use Twitter are using it more." "What they use it for though is the question," he adds. October was quite a big month for Twitter. It made deals with both Google and Microsoft , surpassed the milestone of 5 billion tweets , rolled out the Lists feature on a wide scale, acquired a bigger office space , it expanded into more languages , it partnered with its first charity , and it may have even helped save some babies . Twitter did lose Miley Cyrus , however, so that could explain the decline in new user registrations. I'm half joking, but I can't help but wonder if it did play a significant role.
