Internet Most Popular Source For Sports News And Information

While TV is the most common way for people to watch sports, the Internet is the most popular way for both men and women (36.1% and 32.7% respectively) to get sports news and information, according to a new report by Burst Media. The Internet is trailed by local TV programming (23.7%), national TV networks (15.1%), local newspaper (6.7%), national newspaper (3.6%), and sports radio (2.9%). Among the key age segments, 18-24 years and 25-34 years, the Internet far outweighs both local and national TV coverage as the main source of sports and news information. Adults 55 years and over still turn to local TV news over the Internet. Among all respondents sports content is in demand regardless of which media is cited as their primary source. Nearly one-half (49.2%) of respondents use the Internet to check sports scores and 41.3 percent read sports-related news stories online. Interestingly, nearly as many women as men use the Internet to check sports scores (47.3% vs.50.5%), read sports stories (39% vs. 42.8%) and visit professional team sports sites (25.2% vs. 26.2%). The Burst survey also found over half (55%) of all respondents indicated they have never watched live streaming game coverage on the Internet. "It's abundantly clear that men and women of all ages are active consumers of sports content online," said Chuck Moran, Chief Marketing Officer for Burst Media . "This provides marketers an opportunity to expand the reach of their campaigns targeted to sports enthusiasts by adding an online component". "Also, by utilizing a multichannel strategy of combining Internet and TV, advertisers can surround their target audience with coordinated messaging for greater impact." The survey also found that although the Internet is the most popular media source for sports content, it is not seen as the best source. Overall, national TV sports networks, such as ESPN, are viewed by respondents as the best place to get sports and information news. However, men believe national TV sports networks and Internet sports content sites offer equivalent sports content (30.1% and 28.7% of men, respectively). Will Google Wave Shape the Future of Online Communication?

To be clear, I don't consider myself an expert on Google Wave by any stretch of the imagination, but based on what I have learned about it, these are my responses to frequently asked Google Wave questions. These are just my opinions. We'd love to hear your opinions about Google Wave. Share them here . Will Google Wave replace email? No. It may replace email in the same way that social networks already have. Social networks have not replaced email in general. They have, however replaced it in some cases for some people. For example, friends may send each other a quick note via Facebook message rather than email. However, chances are one of those friends was emailed by Facebook alerting them that they had a new message. For more reasons on why social media (and I include Wave in this) won't replace email, read this article . Will Google Wave catch on with the general public? Obviously, it's incredibly early to tell if Google Wave will catch on on a massive scale. For that matter, what does "catching on" really mean? Does it mean to the extent of email? To the extent of Facebook? Twitter? There are pretty wide gaps between these. Will it catch on to the extent of RSS? Who knows. If you want my honest opinion, I don't think it will achieve Facebook-like status. I'm not sure that it will achieve Twitter-like status either, which is just a fraction of what Facebook has. If Compete's numbers for the US are any indication, Gmail doesn't even come close to attracting the unique users that Twitter does anymore. I have a hard time accepting that Google Wave will be bigger than Gmail (though it's certainly possible). Continue reading

Google and Heineken Study Search for Branding

This week Google released some findings from a test Google Netherlands conducted with Metrixlab, Heineken, and Heineken's agency Twist. They set out to find what effects paid search ads had on branding, and were quite pleased with the results. The idea was to compare the effectiveness of search against other media as well as look at the interaction of search with those other media. They measured the impact of Heineken's "Jouw Heineken" campaign, which led consumers to jouwheineken.nl , where they could design custom beer bottles for purchase. In addition to search, they used TV, online display ads, and YouTube. Here are the key findings that Google highlights from the study: - A Search impression alone creates 23% more brand preference for Heineken than the whole Heineken campaign without search. A search click creates 69% more brand preference. - The fact that search was able to affect a brand metric like brand preference shows the ability for search to move consumers further into the purchase funnel, beyond just awareness. - The addition of Search to TV increased overall brand effect by 1.5 times, illustrating the synergistic effects of Search and TV. - Search proved to be 53% more cost efficient than TV in creating Top of Mind Awareness. - The eye-tracking heat map portion of the study concluded that the 1st search result on the left side captures and retains the most attention. - Frequency testing showed that three impression contacts were 39% better than one at moving brand preference. Last week, Google shared some findings from a separate test that it ran with Levi's. The conclusions drawn were similar. The companies found that paid search ads raised consumer awareness of the Levi's brand, regardless of whether or not they were clicked. Continue reading

Why British Singer Matt Goss Likes Twittering with Fans

Do you know who Matt Goss is? If you're an American, there's a good chance that you don't. Still, in some places, like his British homeland, he is a star. He's sold 16 million records with his group Bros , which also featured his twin brother Luke. He's been making records for about 20 years. Goss will probably be the first to tell you that he's not a superstar in the U.S. It says right on his official site that he comes to America an "unknown." But he is hoping to change that. He's already been headlining shows at Palms in Vegas. Goss is using social media to help build his career in the United States. He uses Twitter specifically to reach out to fans. He says he likes the immediacy of it. He likes that you can say something and get 100 responses back in 15 minutes. He likes that he can connect with his fans and get so many different perspectives. He'll ask people about a song or a video, and what they would change about it. He clearly aims to be a crowd pleaser - the perfect type for Vegas. He has even called upon fans to pick what song they wanted to see released as a single. "People actually have a voice now," he says. "Propaganda is not as relevant as it was when all you had was propaganda and what you read, you had to believe almost. Now the individual and the common man can have a voice." Goss believes there are times when "heavy" messages are appropriate with a tool like Twitter, but thinks it is also a way to escape and have some enjoyment. Either way, he likes that there is no middle man, and notes the importance of accountability. I guess Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson did not attend Matt's session at BlogWorld . Time will tell if Matt's efforts in social media will transfer his stardom to the States, but either way, you can tell he's enjoying trying. Related Articles: Continue reading

Is Google Wave Getting An App Store?

The rollout for Google Wave seems to be going a bit slower than anyone would like , but this hasn't stopped Google from discussing its plans for the future. During the Google Wave GTUG (Google Technology User Group) meeting in London the company the company released one interesting detail that has the web buzzing. According to The Next Web , Google has definite plans to create a Google Wave App Store , which will make it possible for developers to earn money for their developmental efforts. An app store gives us a glimpse of how Google plans to monetize the service, as they would more than likely take a cut of each app purchased. Do you have a Google Wave account? Tell us . The blog goes on speculate about the various possibilities of the Google Wave App Store: "With an app store specifically for Google Wave however, the potential for something as great, if not greater then than the iPhone App Store is a distinct possibility. Already, independent software developers have built and tested Wave applications that handle such tasks as teleconferencing, videoconferencing, and multiplayer gaming, but while the Apple App Store sells software only for the iPhone and Touch, a Wave marketplace could stock in-Wave applications, along with desktop applications, browser extensions and a world of devices, from laptops, phones, tablets and more with built in Wave support." A Google Wave App Store does make sense , but the one thing you need to be successful is users ... which is something that Google Wave is currently lacking. Google only invited 100,000 people to Wave last month , while others are slowly receiving invites. Just to give you a basis for comparison, the iPhone App Store, which is the gold standard, currently has well over 40 million iPhone/iPod Touch owners and over 100,000 apps . Google Wave users shouldn't be anticipating an app store anytime soon, but it's just something they should keep in the back of their minds. Could you see yourself paying for a Google Wave app? U.K. Social Networking Sites Account For 25% Of Display Ads

Social networking sites in the U.K. accounted for 13.8 billion display ad impressions in August 2009, representing more than 25 percent of all display ads viewed online, according to a new study by comScore. Telecommunications companies were the heaviest social networking site advertisers, serving more than 949 million display ad impressions on social networks in August, or about 7 percent of all display ads delivered in the site category. The retail advertiser category ranked second with 753 million display ad views, followed by banking brands with 248 million, travel brands with 213 million, and entertainment brands with 181 million display ad views. Among the top 10 advertiser categories on social networking sites, teen content advertisers delivered the highest amount of their ad impressions in the social networking category at 37.3 percent. Online dating advertiser (33.8%) and retail advertisers (30.1%) also delivered an above average proportion of their ads in the site category. A demographic analysis of display ads on social networking sites in the U.K. found while ad delivery skewed somewhat younger than average, all age segments were reached with a notable percentage of display ads. Display-Ad-Demographics 15-24 year olds were the highest indexing age segment, accounting for 29 percent of display ad impressions while representing 23 percent of the total category audience. Those between the ages of 25-44 received ads at a slightly higher than average rate, while those 45 and older received ads at a lower than average rate. Each of the five age segments accounted for at least 15 percent of the category audience and 10 percent of ad impressions. “CPMs on social networking sites have traditionally suffered relative to other content categories, in part because of the perception that much of the audience are younger consumers with lower spending power,” said Mike Read, comScore managing director, Europe. “However, these data suggest that every demographic segment is reached via social networking sites and that no particular age segment accounts for an overwhelming percentage of ads delivered. Given the overall reach and volume of ads delivered on social networking sites, brand advertisers who ignore this channel may be missing a significant opportunity and enabling their competitors to gain a dominant share of voice in the channel.” Continue reading
