Fox Launches iPhone DVD Trivia App

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has launched an iPhone and computer application called FoxPop, aimed at offering users a more interactive experience while they watch DVDs or Blu-ray Disc. The FoxPop app is free and works by "listening" and syncing to an exact moment in a movie, using real-time audio recognition technology. As events happen in the movie, facts and trivia automatically "pop up" on the iPhone or computer offering viewers new information each time they watch a movie. From am actor on the screen, a location, or song, FoxPop provides users with information about the scene. FoxPop will launch with the DVD release of "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" on December 1. Other films slated to receive the FoxPop treatment include "500 Days of Summer" and "Jennifer's Body." Additional application features include the ability for users to share and chat with friends while watching a movie via social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. A collapsible dashboard "Now Playing" feature provides users with a large space to see information about characters, places and trivia related to the film. "By providing interesting movie-related information and the ability to engage with fellow Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian audiences, the application creates a powerful new connection between the movie and its viewers," said Mary Daily, EVP North America Marketing of Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. iPhone Most Popular Touchscreen Device

Touchscreen mobile phone adoption in the U.S. showed a significant 159 percent growth rate during the past year to 23.8 million users, according to a new report from comScore. The growth in touchscreen device adoption outpaced the already strong 63 percent growth in U.S. adoption of smartphones. "Touchscreen phones have quickly gained adoption as new devices have flooded the mobile marketplace," said Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president of Mobile. "It's clear that consumers are embracing touchscreen interfaces that allow them to easily navigate the increasingly powerful and complex services afforded by new phones. "This is a trend that should continue to pick up as additional touchscreen devices, many of them running the Android operating system, arrive in the market before the holiday shopping season." The Apple iPhone ranked as the top touchscreen device with 32.9 percent of touchscreen users age 13 and older, nearly four times larger than the market share of the next largest device, the LG Dare (8.7%). LG Voyager ranked third with 7.8 percent of the market, followed by the Blackberry Storm (7%) and Palm Treo (6.5%). "The iPhone clearly set the trend in the industry for touchscreen devices, so it's no surprise that it has the largest share of the market," said Donovan. "But as other players have entered the touchscreen market with compelling devices, competition is clearly heating up." Unsurprisingly, smartphones in general and touchscreen devices specifically tend to be more popular among younger users. While 38.8 percent of all mobile subscribers are under the age of 35, 51.4 percent of smartphone users are in the same age group, as are 57.7 percent of touchscreen device users. Continue reading

Verizon CEO on iPhone: It’s Entirely Apple’s Call

Recently during a third-quarter conference call Verizon CEO, Ivan Seidenberg, stated that bringing the iPhone to Verizon is a decision that is totally up to Apple. Do you think the iPhone will ever be on Verizon? Tell us what you think . Below is the full quote from the conference call... “ This is a decision that is exclusively in Apple’s court ... Obviously we would be interested if they thought it would make sense for them to have us as a partner. And so we will leave it with them on that score. We want to broaden the base of choice for customers, and hopefully along the way, Apple, as well as others, will decide to jump on the bandwagon.” Previously, Seidenberg has said that he believes that Apple would likely wait until 2010 to bring the iPhone to Verizon , as this is when the new 4G LTE wireless network will be rolling out. The new 4G network features the same standards as AT&T as well as other providers, which would make the iPhone's transition much easier. With the new " Droid Does " advertising campaign in full swing, it could make negotiations between Verizon and Apple quite uncomfortable . Some have even speculated that Verizon doesn't see Apple partnering with them and will begin burning bridges with even harsher advertisements. Your choice: iPhone on AT&T or Verizon - Tell us which one you choose . Related Articles: > Continue reading

Is Google Wave Getting An App Store?

The rollout for Google Wave seems to be going a bit slower than anyone would like , but this hasn't stopped Google from discussing its plans for the future. During the Google Wave GTUG (Google Technology User Group) meeting in London the company the company released one interesting detail that has the web buzzing. According to The Next Web , Google has definite plans to create a Google Wave App Store , which will make it possible for developers to earn money for their developmental efforts. An app store gives us a glimpse of how Google plans to monetize the service, as they would more than likely take a cut of each app purchased. Do you have a Google Wave account? Tell us . The blog goes on speculate about the various possibilities of the Google Wave App Store: "With an app store specifically for Google Wave however, the potential for something as great, if not greater then than the iPhone App Store is a distinct possibility. Already, independent software developers have built and tested Wave applications that handle such tasks as teleconferencing, videoconferencing, and multiplayer gaming, but while the Apple App Store sells software only for the iPhone and Touch, a Wave marketplace could stock in-Wave applications, along with desktop applications, browser extensions and a world of devices, from laptops, phones, tablets and more with built in Wave support." A Google Wave App Store does make sense , but the one thing you need to be successful is users ... which is something that Google Wave is currently lacking. Google only invited 100,000 people to Wave last month , while others are slowly receiving invites. Just to give you a basis for comparison, the iPhone App Store, which is the gold standard, currently has well over 40 million iPhone/iPod Touch owners and over 100,000 apps . Google Wave users shouldn't be anticipating an app store anytime soon, but it's just something they should keep in the back of their minds. Could you see yourself paying for a Google Wave app? Google’s Panoramio Gets an iPhone App

Google has released a new iPhone app for Panoramio, which lets users upload photos right from their iPhone. "Tens of millions of mobile users own a device with a good camera and GPS," said Fernando Delgado of Panoramio. "We realize that a lot of these users may want to share photos of places with the rest of the world via Google Maps and Google Earth." "The philosophy behind the app is to keep it simple: sign in (only the first time), pick a photo from your device or take a new photo, and upload it straight to Panoramio," explains Delgado. "If available, the geoposition will be automatically set, and you can optionally add a title to the photo." This is the first time Panoramio has released a mobile app, but Google says it is working on an Android application to compliment it. Panoramio photos are used on Google Earth and Google Maps as photo layers, where people all over th world can see them. The service lets users tag their photos under categories like art, buildings, etc. Continue reading
