Google Makes a Second Real-Time Search Announcement

This may be the year of real-time search, but this week alone has captured much of the attention related to the subject. Yahoo is rolling out something close to real-time search today, and of course the big news is that Google has begun incorporating real-time search results right into its regular SERPs. Google has now made another real-time search-related announcement in that they are now offering Twitter integration with the Google Search Appliance. Google Search Appliance can now show users tweets next to their internal Search Appliance results. "Social information is important for businesses: employees searching for information needed to do their jobs benefit from real-time news too," says Cyrus Mistry, Product Manager, Google Enterprise Search. "They might be developing a new breakfast cereal, or designing a marketing plan for a clothing line, or writing strategy report for a political campaign. In all of these cases, understanding what is being said just as Twitter users are saying it can be invaluable." It looks something like this: "Customers have told us that placing web results next to intranet ones often allows employees to think differently about a particular topic and approach it in new ways," says Mistry. "By integrating enterprise search with more of the information that exists in the cloud, like tweets, employees can more easily leverage the wisdom of the crowd." Google says it should take no more than fifteen minutes to get the Twitter box up and running on Google Search Appliance. The option is available to enable it for only some users, or you can set up to let all users have access. You can also set it up to let users choose for themselves whether or not they want Twitter results. More information about set-up and integration is available here and here . Continue reading

Google Adds Relevance Option to Docs Search

In Google Docs, there is a new sort-by-relevance feature for search results. When you search in Google Docs, your results will be organized by relevance, rather than "last modified date", which has been the way of the past. There is a menu on the right side of the toolbar that lets you decide how you want your results sorted. "This improvement to search within Docs also includes automatic stemming and synonyms," says Vijay Bangaru, Product Manager, Google Docs. "So if you search for 'check account', we'll also include results for a few variations of those words, including 'checking account' (which is what you probably meant to type). Or if you search for "mac book", we'll also include results for 'macbook'." There is also a new "export all" option in Google Docs to let you export all of your documents (limited to 2GB at a time) with a single click. Google says that's the equivalent of about 100,000 documents. In addition, you can export one file and email it to anyone by selecting an item, clicking "share", and selecting "email as attachment." You can then choose if you want to send it as a PDF, MS Office file, etc. Finally, Google is removing the "email-in" feature from Google Docs because it has been too buggy and it only supports a small subset of document types compared to the Docs list. They're taking it down temporarily to work on it, and will bring it back with better functionality. New Google Feature Could Steal Some of Bing’s Travel Thunder

Google has launched a new "Translated Search" tool as one of the search engines search options. Google's search options can currently be accessed by clicking "show options" on any results page, once a search has been performed (although you may not even have to do that soon). The idea is that searchers can more easily find and read content written in other languages. Google has offered a similar feature in Google Translate , for quite some time, but this brings it right to the searcher's realm of familiarity. Let's face it. Most Google users probably don't even know Google Translate exists, and if they do, it may not occur to them to use it as a means for searching for content. "Now, when you search on Google for something in your own language, you can use this tool to search the web in another language," says Google . "Click 'Show Options' at the top of the search results page and select 'Translated search' to try it out. We'll algorithmically select the best language(s) to translate your search query into and then return you translated results from those pages. We'll even display results from multiple languages." "For example, if you search for [restaurant reviews antwerp] while on vacation in Belgium and want to find more reviews or review sites beyond those that are just available in English, select "Translate search" in the 'Show Options' panel," the company adds. "We'll automatically select French and Dutch (the languages spoken in Belgium), translate your query into these languages and then translate the results back into English for you to read. If you’d like to search specific languages, just modify the languages in the panel above the results. You can display results for up to five languages at once and select from 51 languages to search." If Google moves forward with the SERP redesign that it has been testing, this feature could have an impact on Bing usage for all things travel. The Translated Search feature obviously has purpose for other kinds of searches, but the example above makes a really good case for using it while traveling to other countries. Google is in the process of rolling the feature out, so it is possible that you do not have it available yet, but you should very soon from the sound of it.
