Google Shares Top Retail Searches for the Holiday Season

Google has shared the top retail searches for the 2009 holiday season. These results are based on the company's Insights for Search tool. "Using Google Insights for Search, we can see that the hottest toys over the last seven days include stalwarts like Pikachu and Legos, as well as newcomers, such as the Nerf Marshmellow Shooter and the surprise hit of the holiday season, a blanket-with-sleeves known as the Snuggie," says Eric Lopez of the Google Retail Team. "In the shopping category, we've seen Black Friday reach new heights, toping the rising search term list over the last 30 days as consumers continue to seek out the best prices," adds Lopez. "Consumers too continue to turn to familiar, top retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon and Macy's." Google has been encouraging retailers to start looking ahead to the rest of the Winter season with regards to what people will be searching for: things like Valentine's Day gifts, Prom dresses, wedding planning, ski equipment, etc. On a positive note for retailers, new research from Market Force Info finds that a good percentage of consumers intend to "splurge" on at least one item over the next few months. Google’s Year in Custom Search

Google's Custom Search turned three in 2009, and it had arguably its biggest year to date. The technology is powering "many tens of millions" of queries a day on millions of sites, according to the company. As many others are doing, Google is reminiscing about the year that is almost over, and reflecting upon some of its accomplishments. The Custom Search Team specifically is reflecting on some of its highlights for 3009. Google lists the following as key developments for the year in custom search: integration with several hosters to bring Custom Search to your doorstep enabled support for rich snippets , giving you more control over presentation of results it's now easier for you to promote specific content to the top of your search results we deployed contextual search within Blogger , Google Sites and Wikipedia automatic transliteration is now integrated into the search box improved results rendering flexibility with the Custom Search Element plug-n-play with themes for enhanced customizability of results look and feel added support for structured metadata and the ability to restrict results by specific attributes we got you ready for the growing population of users searching your websites with mobile devices , such as Android phones, iPhone, iPod Touch, Palm Pre, etc. Google promises additional metadata support in the new year, with more results customization and other features for Custom Search. Verify Your Place Page in Google’s Local Search Results

When you find a business on Google Maps and click "more info", you will be taken to that business' "Place Page." These are the pages that Google introduced a while back that essentially gather content related to that particular business in one place. One might find photos, coupons, reviews, etc. on the Place Page. Businesses can tell Google if they want specific things there, but if you don't claim your listing, Google will put whatever it wants there. Now, however, Google is letting users know when owners have verified their Place Pages. If it is verified, there is now a link with a checkmark beside it at the top of the page that says "owner-verified listing." If the listing has not been verified, users are now greeted with links that say "Edit the place," or "Business Owner?". The latter give you an opportunity to verify the listing if you are indeed the business owner. The former lets users make edits to the page. Obviously, you're going to want to verify your listing to prevent any reputation-tarnishing information from appearing. As we discussed recently, the local search landscape continues to change dramatically, and paying attention to things like this is only going to become increasingly important, not only from a reputation management standpoint, but from simply a visibility standpoint as more people gravitate to the Internet (especially with mobile) to find local business listings. Google Puts Universal Search in Suggestions, Launches Quick Scroll

In case you were thinking that Google hadn't made enough announcements this week, they have made a couple more. First, they are adding universal search results to Google Suggest, and second, they have released a new Chrome extension called Google Quick Scroll. Universal search in Google Suggest means that if you begin typing a query, not only will Google give you suggested text to help you complete your search, but they may even give you some of the other universal search information you're used to seeing in search results. One example would be weather results for specific locations: "This kind of information will appear in Suggest either above or below the suggested search terms for a variety of queries," Google says . "For example, you can type 'delta 140' to see the flight status. You can also quickly discover the current time, figure out how many Euros you'll get per dollar, or even brush up on metric conversions. In total, there are currently 10 universal search features available in Google Suggest: weather, flight status, local time, area codes, package tracking, answers, definitions, calculator, currency and unit conversions — and we plan to add additional features in the future." As Google continues to add additional features to Universal Search in Google Suggest, let's hope that they are able to better control those than they have been with Google Suggest in general , particularly if they add images to it. Google began adding ads to Google Suggest earlier this year. The Quick Scroll Chrome extension lets users use Google's search capabilities after leaving our results page. After a user clicks a result the extension scrolls right to the relevant content. A small black box appears in the lower right hand corner of the browser with a couple snippets of text from the page that might be relevant to your query. The extension works kind of like your web browser's "find" feature, but it isn't limited to exact words like that. It appears to use Google's algorithm for determining relevance. "Like Google Search, Quick Scroll analyzes things like proximity, prominence and position of the words to identify the most relevant content," the company says. "You can think of it like a personal assistant who reads webpages before you do and highlights the parts you might want to read. If several sections of the page have useful content, Quick Scroll will show you multiple text excerpts from different portions of the page and you can click on any of them to scroll to that spot." Quick Scroll doesn't appear for all results. It only shows up if Google doesn't detect that the entire page is relevant to your query, and there is actually a need to scroll to a specific section. Google Most Popular Site Among Seniors

The number of seniors actively using the Internet has increased by 55 percent to 17.5 million over the last five years, according to a new report from Nielsen. Among people 65+, the growth of women in the last five years has outpaced the growth of men by 6 percent. More seniors are also spending more time online. Time spent on the Internet by seniors increased 11 percent in the last five years, from 52 hours per month in November 2004 to just over 58 hours in 2009. "The over 65 crowd represents about 13% of the total population and with this increase in online usage, they are beginning to catch up with their offline numbers," said Chuck Schilling, research director, agency & media, Nielsen's online division. "Looking at what they're doing online, it makes sense they're engaged in many of the same activities that dominate other age segments - e-mail, sharing photos, social networking, checking out the latest news and weather - and it's worth noting that a good percentage of them are spending time with age-appropriate pursuits such as leisure travel, personal health care and financial concerns." Online seniors participate in a variety of activities, from email to bill paying. Checking personal email was the top online activity for the majority (88.6%) of seniors in the last 30 days. Viewing or printing online maps and checking the weather were the second and third most popular activities, with 68.6 and 60.1 percent, respectively. The most popular online destination for people over 65 in November 2009 was Google Search, with 10.3 million unique visitors. Windows Media Player and Facebook ranked in the second and third position with 8.2 million and 7.9 million visitors, respectively. Overall, the number of unique visitors who are 65 or older on social networking and blogs has jumped 53 percent in the last two years. 8.2% of all social network and blog visitors are over 65, just 0.1 percentage points less than the number of teenagers who visit these sites.
