Facebook Reminds Users How to Handle Death

If you've had a friend or loved-one die during the Facebook age, you may or may not have known that Facebook will memorialize their profile if you let them know about it. Facebook's Max Kelly reminded us of the fact in a post on the company's blog today. While the process has been around for a while, the company evidently thought it best to bring up because as Facebook recently redesigned its home page, a new feature was added that gives suggestions for "reconnecting" with old contacts. As Pete Cashmore pointed out over the weekend, a lot of people are getting suggestions for people they really don't want to reconnect with, and in some cases people who have died. Kelly talks about how the company was once faced with deciding what to do with the profile of a dead friend and co-worker. "The question soon came up: What do we do about his Facebook profile? We had never really thought about this before in such a personal way," he recalls. "Obviously, we wanted to be able to model people's relationships on Facebook, but how do you deal with an interaction with someone who is no longer able to log on? When someone leaves us, they don't leave our memories or our social network. To reflect that reality, we created the idea of 'memorialized' profiles as a place where people can save and share their memories of those who've passed." "We understand how difficult it can be for people to be reminded of those who are no longer with them, which is why it's important when someone passes away that their friends or family contact Facebook to request that a profile be memorialized," continues Kelly. "For instance, just last week, we introduced new types of Suggestions that appear on the right-hand side of the home page and remind people to take actions with friends who need help on Facebook. By memorializing the account of someone who has passed away, people will no longer see that person appear in their Suggestions." When a Facebook account has been "memorialized," Facebook sets the privacy so that only confirmed friends can see the profile or locate it in a search. People are also prevented from logging into it, but it lets friends and family leave posts on the profile's wall as a memorial. This is something to consider if you ever lose someone who is a Facebook user. It also brings up a broader discussion about what to do with any social media profile, blog, or site when someone passes away. Do you think Facebook's profile memorialization is the appropriate way to handle the situation? Discuss here . Related Articles: > Continue reading

Microsoft Wants You To Bing Up Your Windows 7

Microsoft unleashed Windows 7 onto the public today, and the company's Bing team has released some downloadable wallpaper things for the operating system. The themes are based on the images that the search engine uses on its homepage. "A lot of people ask us for desktop versions of our images," says Stephanie Horstmanshof of Bing. "And now you (and your friends, and your family, and your casual acquaintances) can get them!" Whether or not you are a fan of Bing as a search engine, there's no denying that there are some visually pleasing images that appear there. Here are some of the wallpaper options: The themes are more than just wallpaper images though. The themes are a combination of pictures, colors, and sounds for the computer. They include desktop backgrounds, screen savers, window border colors, and sound schemes. Some include icons and mouse pointers. Microsoft reminds users that they can also integrate Bing right into the operating system by: 1. Downloading the Bing OpenSearch description document . 2. Double-clicking the downloaded document to add the Bing "Search Connector" on your machine. 3. From Windows explorer use the Search Box, type the terms for which you want to search and get the power of Bing into Windows. "You can perform Windows actions on the search results, such as Open, Send to, and so on," says the Bing API Team. Continue reading

Majority Of Consumers Want To Interact With Brands Online

The majority (78%) of new media users interact with brands via new media sites, an increase of 32 percent from 2008 (59%), according to a new report from communications firm Cone. The report found new media users believe companies or brands should not only have a presence in new media (95%) but also interact with their consumers (89%). The majority of consumers are still searching for companies and brands on traditional websites (58%) and though email (45%), but anywhere from a third to a quarter of consumers want to interact with brands in social networks (30%) and via online games (24%). Consumers still feel companies' or brands' top priorities within new media should be to problem solve and provide information (61%, up from 43% in 2008) but they are increasingly realizing that marketing messages may be part of their relationship with brands online. People are more willing to engage if incentives are offered such as free products, coupons or discounts (58%), especially among the female demographic (63%). When asked about their impressions of companies or brands present in new media, users said they: Feel a stronger connection (72%, up from 56% in 2008) Feel better served (68%, up from 57% in 2008) Have a more positive image (74%) Are more willing to engage (70%) Have an improved opinion when one of their friends interacts (64%) Choose to "follow"/"friend"/"fan" because it helps showcase their personality online (52%) "Consumers haven't yet been exhausted by brand over saturation in the new media space," says Mike Hollywood, Cone's director of new media. "There is still an opportunity for forward-thinking companies to establish a presence and earn a competitive advantage. Based on the growth of user interactions with companies, countless purchase decisions are being influenced by new media. It's imperative to get on board now that the train has left the station."
