You May Get More Traffic from Twitter Than You Realize

If you use Twitter or create content, you have probably figured out by now that it can be a great tool for driving traffic to your site. There are measures you can take to expand this if your content is not bringing in the Twitter traffic on its own. Is Twitter a significant traffic source for your site? Comment here . If you're not seeing much traffic from Twitter, there is a chance it's coming in anyway, and you're just not aware of it. For that matter, if you are getting a lot of traffic from Twitter, you may be getting even more than you thought. Stan Pugsley, director of business intelligence for iCrossing says that nearly 70% of referral traffic from Twitter goes unmeasured, particularly if you are using web analytics tools like Google Analytics or Omniture. "The problem is not with the web analytics tools, but with the Twitter applications like Tweetdeck and Twhirl that are not based in an Internet Browser," explains Pugsley. "When a user clicks through a link in a tweet, those applications do not register a referring URL that can be picked up by the destination website. It appears that they are coming directly to the site. According to TweetStats, only 31.7% of tweets originate from twitter.com, and those are the visitors that can be tracked back to tweets." Pugsley suggests testing this for yourself, by installing a twitter app like Tweetdeck, installing the Live HTTP headers plug-in for Firefox, and clicking through the URL in a tweet, then looking at the referrer. His observation about missing Twitter traffic stats is not a new one, but probably still a topic that gets overlooked frequently. Back in the summer, Danny Sullivan wrote a couple of articles for Search Engine Land tackling the subject. These dig in quite a bit further. If you feel like you are being shortchanged on your Twitter traffic, these are required reading. As far as simply increasing your traffic from Twitter, here are a few tips: 1. Include some kind of Twitter/tweet button on your content. 2. Abide by this equation, or at least the principle behind it. 3. Make your Twitter presence known throughout your site 4. Use your Twitter presence along with your site on business cards, signatures, etc. 5. Actively engage on Twitter. 6. Tweet your own content. If they're following you, they must be interested in what you have to say (that doesn't mean to just Tweet ads and sales pitches. Tweet useful information). 7. Include ways to share your content on other social networks. It will often find its way to Twitter by other people. 8. Integrate Twitter into your other marketing channels (email for example). I'm sure there are plenty of other tips that could go here. Feel free to share some if you have them. Twitter is much more than a way to drive traffic, but when traffic is the goal, it certainly holds a great deal of potential. If you were unaware that you may be getting Twitter traffic that is not being counted as such, perhaps you will see even more potential. Have you found Twitter traffic that wasn't being counted by analytics services? Talk to ArisYulianta and Friends... about it . Google Eases Retrieval of Sidewiki Entries for Entire Sites

Google has announced the release of a new feature for the Sidewiki API, which the company says makes it easier to retrieve all Sidewiki entries for an entire domain. It allows you to look for new entries created on any page of a site, and subscribe to them via RSS. If you are unfamiliar with Sidewiki, it is available as part of the Google Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer or as a bookmarklet for Chrome, Safari, or other browsers that don't support the Google Toolbar. When using Sidewiki, an expandable window can be viewed on the left-hand side of the web page. When expanded, you can see comments by users or contribute your own. This works for any web page. There is a good chance that your site has been commented on via Sidewiki, and you don't even know about it. This actually brings up a pretty good reputation management point. If you are a webmaster, you may want to at least install the bookmarklet in your browser if you don't use the Google Toolbar. This will allow you to keep tabs on what is being written about your site. These comments are out there for other Sidewiki users to view. More information about how Sidewiki works can be found here. Google has created a top ten list of ways that people are already using Sidewiki. It may give you some ideas: Jason Young speaks from personal experience and gives detailed insight into tuning a bass guitar on EMG's Bass Tips site. Antony Carthy, a programmer in South Africa, wrote tips on how to find latitude and longitude coordinates on Google Maps. Google's own Matt Cutts warns visitors about a deceptive website . Shalin Gala of PETA calls on readers to sign a petition next to an article about animal mistreatment. Ron Burk suggests a missing reference for a medical article . The Mayo Clinic uses Sidewiki to welcome visitors with a special webmaster entry on its homepage (this one requires Sidewiki to view). Jesse Poe from New York offers up great insights in a review of an iPhone app by Daniel Johnston, one of his favorite musicians. Alfonso Grandis from Italy talks about his eye-witness account of a recent earthquake. David Davis, a software engineer from California, improves a snippet of code in a programming tutorial. Michael Roizen from the Cleveland clinic adds his advice about H1N1 vaccinations . Google recommends commenters contribute expert insight, helpful tips, background information, and added perspective when using SideWiki. The company has said in the past that it uses "multiple signals" based on the "quality of the entry," what they know about the author, and other user-contributed signals like voting and flagging. They say they want to only keep the most relevant entries appearing in the sidebar. Related Articles: > Continue reading

New Google Chrome Release Includes Bookmark Sync

Google has launched the latest beta of its Chrome web browser. This release includes bookmark sync. "For those of you who use several computers -- for example, a laptop at work and a desktop at home -- you've asked for a way to keep your Google Chrome bookmarks in sync across multiple computers," explains Google. "Today's new beta release allows you to do just that! You can keep your Google Chrome bookmarks synchronized and up-to-date across the multiple computers you use, without needing to manually recreate your bookmarks every time you use a different computer." The following clip further shows how to use the feature. "Once you've activated Google Chrome bookmark sync on each of your computers, any changes you make to your bookmarks will appear on all synced computers in just a few second (For those of you who are curious, this bit of magic is made possible by the same XMPP -based servers that power Google Talk )," the company says. Google also says that this version is faster. Specifically, Chrome's performance has improved by 30%, based on Mozilla's Dromeao DOM Core tests. That is compared to the most recent stable release. It's actually improved by as much as 400% since the first stable release. The beta is available for download here . You can preview features and give Google feedback. Related Continue reading
