FTC Warns Of Online Free Trial Scams
The Federal Trade Commission has joined an effort to warn consumers about deceptive online marketing related to free trial offers that require people to cancel or opt-out of a recurring charge for future products or services. The Director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, David C. Vladeck, along with officials from Visa and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) are cautioning consumers about the free trial feature, known as a "negative option." In a negative option feature, a company takes a consumer's failure to cancel a free trial offer as permission to begin charging for the service. Continue reading
Twitter App Numbers Growing Strong Going Into 2010
At the LeWeb conference in Paris Twitter is busy making sure that all the developments in the real-time search and social media world aren’t just coming from the Googleplex. Maybe it’s the end of the year rush or it’s the need to create excitement going into 2010 since 2009 was a rough year for many. Whatever the reason the news is fast and furious inthe space in general. Twitter’s busy letting the world in on the sheer volume of apps that have been developed for the service and how they are going to help foster more growth in the near future. TechCrunch is convering the event and tells us Twitter’s Director of Platform Ryan Sarver just took the stage at LeWeb a couple of minutes ago, and shared some announcements with the audience about the future of the platform and the effect this will have on the ecosystem. He also shared a milestone for the company: Sarver said 50,000 registered applications to date have been built using Twitter APIs. The roadmap ahead: Transparency : “we need to be more public about our policy and intentions” Communication : “we need to be out there and let our developers know what’s going on” Utility : “we need to keep providing our robust APIs and enable third-party developers to thrive” Profitability : “when our partners succeed, we succeed” (more details coming early 2010) Of course, since this is Twitter most people will laser in on the P word (profitability). Some of the significant ‘details’ around these areas is that everyone will have full access to the data stream in 2010 (what that actually means is TBD). Look for a new website for developers with dashboards and the like for the development community. Also, as a sign that the development of apps is truly a big deal there will be a Twitter developer conference in 2010 called Chirp in San Francisco next year The conference, which will be geared towards developers, is likely to be similar in some ways to Facebook’s F8 conference that is held each year in San Francisco. Not too many details were given but there is a landing page up already for the event (which is scheduled to take place sometime in 2010). So Twitter continues to flourish and develop to try to handle the continued growth despite some concern about visitor fall off recently. I suspect that some of the developers are the very reason for this ‘concern’ as many people access Twitter through third party apps to begin with and those growing numbers are not tracked by these number crunching entities. Looks like 2010 is going to be another big year for Twitter. Comments Continue reading

PayPal Launches “Send Money” Facebook App
PayPal has introduced a new Facebook app for sending money. The app is designed to allow uses to use PayPal to send money to anyone starting from Facebook. Users only need the person's email address. PayPal Director of Product Marketing Heinz Waelchli explains how it works: Visit our send money application page and click on the "Get Started" button to install the application. Next just fill in the fields in the form and click the "Continue to PayPal" button. You’ll be taken to the PayPal site to log-in (if you don’t already have an account, you can create a new account in minutes). You’ll then choose your method of payment, if you use your PayPal balance or bank account to send money to friends and family within the U.S., it’s free. You can enter a personal message to your recipient if you like. Finally, click on the "send" button and that's it! Your recipient will be notified by email right away. The receiver can then log-in to PayPal to claim the money or quickly sign up for a new account. It's probably a good idea on PayPal's part to have a Facebook app in place before any really significant Facebook e-commerce system takes over . Last month PayPal opened up its global payments platform called PayPal X, which provides APIs and a developer portal. This is likely an important move for keeping PayPal relevant in the social eye as well. On another PayPal-Facebook-realted note, PayPal is in the middle of its second annual " Regift the Fruitcake " campaign, an event, which calls upon people to create virtual fruitcakes and give them to their Facebook friends to raise money for 25 different charities. You can read more about that here . Continue reading

IAB Releases Ad Unit Guidelines Update
The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) released the 2009 update to its ad unit guidelines today. For the first time, the IAB is bringing in creative agencies for input on ad unit recommendations. Historically, these have only come from media agencies and publishers. "By bringing agencies into the process of developing standard ad units, we have taken a step towards improving the creative output and branding potential for interactive media," says Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO of the IAB. "Our next order of business is to drive towards adoption of revised standards that we believe will spur increased investment in interactive advertising—we’ve already proven that there is no medium more accountable—now we have to bring all of its capabilities together to tell great stories to consumers—that’s what advertising is all about." "Being a part of this process gave voice to the creative challenges that agencies faced with the existing standards, ad units, and technologies, and I believe we’ve found a solid way forward in overcoming those challenges," said Jim Russell, Partner, EVP, Director of Digital Strategy, McKinney. "Our goal was to simplify the existing list and I think we’ve developed a long-term strategy for doing this on behalf of the industry." The working group created by the combination of creative agencies, media agencies, and publishers is called the Reimagining Interactive Advertising Task Force. The group has updated the criteria for standard ad units. It did so by looking at industry-wide impression count reports, ad unit availability, agency-side effectiveness reviews, and creative preferences. Two recommendations they made are: - In order to be considered a standard, an ad unit must be commonly bought and offered throughout the marketplace; only seven of the eighteen ad units currently on the list meet the new criteria. - Ad units will not be removed from the standard list in 2009, but must meet the criteria by the end of 2010 The whole IAB Ad Unit Guidelines update can be found here . Next year, the Task Force will release the first list of ad units. Picking Your Online Reputation Battles
Part of managing your online reputation involves your strategy for handling the negative commentary that you acquire. If you write articles on the Internet, use Facebook, Twitter, or other social media outlets, or simply have a prodcut that people talk about, there is a very good chance you will encounter comments somewhere on the web that are less than favorable. That's just the nature of the game. Some people choose to go on the defensive and immediately get caught up in a so-called "flame war." Others just ignore them. You may do a mixture of the two. The right call really depends on the nature of the comment and its potential impact on your brand or product. Negative commentary has been discussed throughout the industry a lot lately. It was a common theme at the recent BlogWorld Expo . Rebecca Kelley, Director of Social Media for 10e20, has written a humorous post on the subject for Jeremy Schoemaker's ShoeMoney blog. "The fact of the matter is that the Internet is like a great big public bathroom stall," she says. Continue reading

Census Bureau Launches New Website For 2010
The U.S. Census Bureau has launched a new website as part of its effort to communicate with Americans about the 2010 census. The website called 2010CENSUS.GOV features an animated marquee that allows users to click on images representative of the population and view video clips aimed at easing fears about the census and encourage participation. "2010CENSUS.GOV puts the census in the hands of the public," said U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves. "You can find out when you will get the form, and how to fill it out and mail it back. The site also provides a substantial amount of information regarding our commitment to privacy and confidentiality." 2010-Census Inside the site, the director's blog will offer a look at census efforts nationwide. Visitors to the blog will be able to comment and share their thoughts. As they go live, social media sites and tools will offer more ways for people to get involved. Other site features include an interactive census form that provides a history and explanation for each of the 10 questions. The Bureau says the form is one of the shortest in history and takes less than 10 minutes to complete. To track the census progress, the site will include a map widget next year that displays mail back response rates. In mid-November, a one-page destination about the census will be available on the site in 59 languages. Users will also be able to download an in-language guide about how to answer the form. By the end of 2009, the entire site will be available in Spanish. Related Articles: > AMA Launches Website Focused On Flu Symptoms > Government Adds New Features To Continue reading

Small Businesses Slowly Embracing Twitter
Only a small percentage (9%) of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) currently use Twitter to market themselves, according to a new study by BIA/Kelsey. In addition, 32 percent of SMBs report they plan to include social media in their marketing plans in the next 12 months by establishing a presence on social sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn or MySpace. Stephen Marshall, BIA Kelsey, Director of Research and Consulting More than a third (39%) of SMBs plan to include customer ratings or reviews on their own websites in the next 12 months, and 31 percent plan to include links or ads placed on social sites or blogs. "Social media is clearly gaining traction among SMB advertisers," said Steve Marshall, director of research and consulting, BIA/Kelsey . "As local consumers increasingly gravitate to social networks, local businesses understand they need to be part of the conversation." "This opens up a market opportunity for local media companies that offer products and services that enable local advertisers to easily integrate social media into their marketing efforts." The study found the adoption of social media by SMBs is more widespread among younger businesses. The percentage of SMBs by age of business currently using Twitter for promotion is as follows: Continue reading
