Bing Shares More Of 2009’s Top Search Terms

You may recall that a lot of entities -including Google, Yahoo, and Bing - released some top/best of/worst of 2009 lists back in late November and early December, seemingly forgetting about the last one-twelfth of the year. Continue reading

Microsoft Launches Bing iPhone App

Microsoft has launched a Bing app for the iPhone. It's now available for download in the Apple App store. Of course the iPhone app is not the first mobile experience Bing has offered. There is already Bing for Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, Sidekick and select BREW-based devices on Verizon. Key features of the iPhone app include: - Daily image from Bing.com - Easy to access voice search - Tips and tricks on the home page - "Locate Me" functionality - Ability to add pushpins and save locations - Show multiple locations on a single map "Our investments in voice search (you may have played with them on Windows phones or BlackBerry already) continues in our iPhone App and works great for map locations as well as old fashioned web search," says Justin Jed of Bing for mobile. "Just say 'San Francisco weather,' for a quick result, or even say a full address for a map or directions. Continue reading

Yahoo Rolling Out Something Kind of Like Real-Time Search

Reports indicate that Yahoo will be rolling out its own version of real-time search results today. Google of course did this earlier in the week, but Yahoo's offering will not exactly be real-time. Google has access to Twitter's firehose (although everybody will have access next year ) because the two companies entered an agreement recently . Yahoo doesn't have access to that, and is just relying on its own algorithms to deliver recent tweets at the bottom of search results. Whereas Google's feature includes tweets, Facebook updates, and a variety of other sources, it looks like Yahoo's Continue reading

Death, Disease, Money, and Twitter on Bing

Microsoft's Bing has revealed a top ten list of the most popular trending topics of 2009. To determine these, Bing analyzed billions of search queries and developed the list based on searches made with the Bing search (I mean decision) engine. "Not surprisingly, we saw a lot of folks using Bing for quick access to favorite sites like Facebook, MSN, Youtube and Craigslist," says Bing Geneal Manager Danielle Tiedt. "We also saw a lot of more complex searches such as product related queries in which people used Bing to help decide what MP3 player to buy and travel searches to help find the best deals on a tropical vacation." Here is the list Bing came up with: 1. Michael Jackson 2. Twitter 3. Swine Flu 4. Stock Market 5. Farrah Fawcett 6. Patrick Swayze 7. Cash for Clunkers 8. Jon and Kate Gosselin 9. Billy Mays 10. Jaycee Dugard As you can see, dead celebrities took a lot of searchers' time this year (and there certainly were a lot to pass away in '09). It is no surprise that Twitter was high on the list. It has been a huge year for the company. With H1N1 and the economy dominating the news for much of the year, it is also unsurpsing to see terms like "swine flu," "stock market," and "cash for clunkers" on the list. As a bonus, Bing provided a "sneak peek" at the top celebrity searches on Bing in 2009. The top three were Perez Hilton, followed by Robert Pattinson, and Megan Fox.
