Online Holiday Spending Closes In On $20 Billion
Online holiday spending reached $19.9 billion in the first 41 days of the shopping season, marking a 3 percent increase over the same time period last year, according to the latest report from comScore. The most recent week saw above average online spending growth of 4 percent versus a year ago, two days shattered the $800 million mark in spending, led by Thursday, December 10, with $852 million. "Although this most recent week of holiday shopping did not produce the first $900 million spending day, we saw above average growth rates including a strong end to the week," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. "Monday, December 14 - otherwise known as Green Monday - is likely to produce our heaviest online spending total for the season and represents our best opportunity to finally surpass that elusive $900 million spending threshold. The early part of this upcoming week should bring us the heaviest online spending days of the season before consumers refocus their attention on brick-and-mortar retail locations to finish up their holiday shopping." Since comScore began tracking ecommerce spending in 2001, it has recorded thirteen spending days over $800 million, each has occurred in the past three holiday seasons. The heaviest online spending day on record was Wednesday, December 9, 2008. Of the top ten spending days on record, four happened in 2009, four in 2008, and two in 2007. Continue reading
Google Most Popular Site Among Seniors
The number of seniors actively using the Internet has increased by 55 percent to 17.5 million over the last five years, according to a new report from Nielsen. Among people 65+, the growth of women in the last five years has outpaced the growth of men by 6 percent. More seniors are also spending more time online. Time spent on the Internet by seniors increased 11 percent in the last five years, from 52 hours per month in November 2004 to just over 58 hours in 2009. "The over 65 crowd represents about 13% of the total population and with this increase in online usage, they are beginning to catch up with their offline numbers," said Chuck Schilling, research director, agency & media, Nielsen's online division. "Looking at what they're doing online, it makes sense they're engaged in many of the same activities that dominate other age segments - e-mail, sharing photos, social networking, checking out the latest news and weather - and it's worth noting that a good percentage of them are spending time with age-appropriate pursuits such as leisure travel, personal health care and financial concerns." Online seniors participate in a variety of activities, from email to bill paying. Checking personal email was the top online activity for the majority (88.6%) of seniors in the last 30 days. Viewing or printing online maps and checking the weather were the second and third most popular activities, with 68.6 and 60.1 percent, respectively. The most popular online destination for people over 65 in November 2009 was Google Search, with 10.3 million unique visitors. Windows Media Player and Facebook ranked in the second and third position with 8.2 million and 7.9 million visitors, respectively. Overall, the number of unique visitors who are 65 or older on social networking and blogs has jumped 53 percent in the last two years. 8.2% of all social network and blog visitors are over 65, just 0.1 percentage points less than the number of teenagers who visit these sites. Paramount Follows Up “Paranormal” Marketing with More Social Fun
Paramount, the company behind the distribution of the smash-hit Paranormal Activity is now showcasing a new film-meets-social media project. Paramount's Paramount Digital Entertainment (PDE) division has teamed up with Adobe, MySpace, Mountain Dew, and Blockbuster on the production, distribution, and marketing on a new "supernatural thriller" web series called Circle of Eight . We were interested in how the concept came about. PDE Senior Vice President, Creative Development & Production, Keith Quinn tells WebProNews, "The story and the interactive format were conceived at the same time—Circle of Eight was born as a project that was intended and customized for digital distribution in its debut window, and across platforms for additional windows." Circle of Eight debuted with 3 episodes on MySpace. Viewers are able to share and embed the content, interact with the series through social gaming and content, and broadcast their thoughts via forums and commenting. The series will consist of 10 episodes in all, and the gaming and social media elements are integrated into the show itself. The marketing is integrated too. That's where Mountain Dew comes in. Mountain Dew plays a "critical" role in the Circle of Eight storyline. Continue reading
